Sifteo.

Interactive Sifteo cubes... an interesting concept I must say... though maybe targeted at kids... would be cool if they ported their technology over to smartphones and smartpads =3

Sifteo cubes are 1.5 inch computers with full-color displays that sense their motion, sense each other, and wirelessly connect to your computer.

Seriously?

You will be unprepared...

and now... it is available for play online in flash

Number 1 was killed in Malaysia.
Number 2 was murdered in England.
Number 3 was hunted down in Kenya.

That's why, I wear Number 4.

Imagine... you are an expert in your field, a job few can perform... and one day, this expertise could be used to save millions.. would you do it?

Now, imagine... that this is a suicide mission... not a risk like the labs working with SARS, with a chance of contamination... but a task that would result in certain death... and even so... chances of success are slim to none...

Would you still do it?

Well, that is the fate of the Fukushima Fifty.

In the midst of the reactor meltdown... where anyone within 20 miles of the nuclear plant was asked to evacuate... 50 unnamed operators voluntarily chose to stay behind to salvage the situation.... this number has since risen to 150-180...

and things are not turning out well.

5 workers have died since the quake and 22 more have been injured for various reasons, while 2 are missing. 1 worker was hospitalized after suddenly grasping his chest and finding himself unable to stand, and another needed treatment after receiving a blast of radiation near a damaged reactor. 11 workers were injured in a hydrogen explosion at reactor No. 3.

And now 3 men were scorched when knee-deep water sloshed down their boots and the contamination is believed to have come from one of the plant's six reactors - reactor 3 - which is thought to have been cracked.

An exposure of 100 milli-sieverts per year is considered the lowest level at which any increase in cancer risk is evident... these men were exposed to radiation between 170 to 180 milli-sieverts... and according to TEPCO, a total of 14 workers have been exposed to at least 100 milli-sieverts since the March 11 quake...

and to put it in perspective.. here are the doses you get for medical procedures..
and you feel like crap after that brief exposure... well.. now imagine prolonging that exposure =S

and I guess what really brings the situation home.. are the text messages sent out by these anonymous workers to their loved ones...

To his wife, “Please continue to live well, I cannot be home for a while.”

in movies, heroes are epic beings completing the impossible...
in reality, heroes are often the most ordinary of men...

... who find the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.

Indeed, the Samurai Spirit lives on in Japan. Death before Dishonour.

Well, you should really by now know of the situation in Japan, and the impact it has worldwide... and I'm sure that lots of people have lots of doubt about the details and all, so yeah, here is a simplified video from Japan targeted at bringing the message across to its youth.

and if you want more in-depth explanations of the situation occurring now... here is a nice summary =3

Spectacular duet by a great looking ladyboy, Bell Nuntita stunning all that saw and heard her =3

Even if the world is against you, be true to yourself ^^x

In the different series held in various countries, we have really seen great talents like Susan Boyle and Paul Potts from British's Got Talent... and China's got talent Zhu Xiaoming and Liu Wei the armless pianist... of ordinary people with extraordinary untapped talents...

But somehow, I just feel that this time Thailand's Got Talent, is just more raw, down to earth... and just more inspirational =3

Here's Somsak Hemrun the one handed guitarist.

LoL'ed... apparently the innate facial recognition system in babies detects their mom's contorted face while sneezing as that of a stranger =/

Not the official commercial, but something pretty effective from the peepx from Hall =3

This is one of the few times I am not going to quote any part of the original article... you should really read it in its entirety, "Doctoral degrees - The disposable academic" from The Economist..... true the article is biased towards the financial aspects of life, and not really towards the pure pursuit of one's ideal world and dreams... but then again, in this finite world... opportunities are lacking... especially in Singapore.. in the civil service, we have too many scholars.. and too little positions... should the system be more rigid? or are we looking at it all wrong?

Sadly, in the Science field, I doubt it will change for any better in the near future... with the current in-flux of foreign talents with both a M.D. and a Ph.D... even a masters is no longer sufficient.

in a way.. the current society is now reaching that tipping point... we have too many Ph.Ds and too little specialists of skilled fields... even in Singapore.. school or even ITE doesn't prepare you to be a good cobbler, watch maker, seamstress, key maker... jobs vital to the maintenance of everyday life as you know it... family business shunned by the younger generation... in 20-30 years when the older generation stop working... will we have to turn to automation to meet our basic needs? Are we too myopic in our view of the future? Or just too stubborn to change?

Gotta say, The Girl Effect is an interesting perspective to poverty in the world... but in all honesty, sometimes schools are no longer the solution to modern day problems.

With all the wide screen phones on the market, I always felt that multi-/hydra- screen were the way to go next... taking gaming or movies on the go to a new level... now the great minds at MIT have made it a reality =3

The Junkyard Jumbotron lets you take a bunch of random displays and instantly stitch them together into a large, virtual display, simply by taking a photograph of them. It works with laptops, smartphones, tablets --- anything that runs a web browser. It also highlights a new way of connecting a large number of heterogenous devices to each other in the field, on an ad-hoc basis.

Many years ago, origami was limited to Japanese books, conferences, exhibitions and night classes... today... with youtube and all.. boundaries are broken.

Indeed Carly's blog will allow great insights into understanding autism..

and just to clarify, it is known for quite some time that autism does give rise to Savants... estimated at 1 every 10 autistic cases... we just need realise and nurture them...

and if you are interested in knowing the greatness humans can achieve with great sacrifice? well the series Beautiful Minds: A Voyage into the Brain... gives great insight into the lives of Savants.

He's voted off AI... but I guess in terms of winning... its totally subjective =3

In the wake of this year's Hall Productions... I guess this song is rubbing off me =3

"... We all have a story to tell..."

Really love the concept behind it... I guess the question is always the same... are you sure, you are all ready to leave?

And yes, although we are in the first week of March... jut a gentle reminder that Earth Hour is happening in the last week of March... 8.30pm on Saturday, March 26... where you are encouraged to switch off electrical appliances for 1 hour... for the past few years, NTU has been taking part in it.. but it hasn't really gone mainstream in Singapore...

This year, Orchard Road is going to be taking part again, in a bigger way.

" ... Orchard Road will be transformed into a "sea of candles" as part of an initiative to conserve electricity in the annual Earth Hour event coming up this month.

Leading by example, the Orchard Road Business Association has more than 50 malls, hotels and retailers along the shopping belt participating in the initiative - twice the number as compared to last year.

"More than a hundred establishments are also participating in one way or another by setting their temperatures at 24 degree celsius, by turning off non-essential lights, and by turning off the facade lighting", said executive director Steven Goh.

"We are going to turn Orchard Road into a sea of candles", Mr Goh added...."

and yes.. the problem is really real... as a recent paper in Nature, concluded that the 6th mass-extinction may be underway... and just highlighted to the public worldwide the urgency of the issue.

Looks like an adjustable corset... hopefully not as stiff as the Victorian ages... but yeah... maybe Gong Li already started using it in The Curse of the Golden Flower? =x
