Really interesting perspectives and information for small talk at the bar or picking up that cute geeky girl in the corner =x

yeah, the new Radiohead single is out.. and the lyrics are really meaningful as always...

in one aspect... to me, it could really be about the struggles of life.. as the lotus flower blossoms from the mud... so do we grow and "flower" in the midst of the shit in life..

so really, when life gives you lemons... just add vodka =P

however, another interesting take at the song, came to me when I watched the MTV for it... as a medical student, Yorke's freestyle dance moves just really reminded me of the uncontrollable motor tics that you see in Tourette Syndrome...

and its a interesting outlook... as normally such uncontrollable tics are shunned by the society, most not understanding the nature of the disorder, and viewing sufferers as freaks... but here, is a MTV that uses such tics to form a dance... beauty within the chaos.. and taking a second look at the lyrics.. some of them seem to fit in with such a view.

"... Invisible, do what you want, do what you want... Tonight I'll set you free... Slowly we unfurl... As lotus flowers... And all I want is the moon upon a stick... Dancing around the pit... Just to see what it is... I can't kick the habit...

maybe its cause the album is called "The King of Limbs"... maybe it wasn't intentional... maybe it was never meant to be... maybe its just me, but yeah, this song just seemed to have a whole new meaning to me ^^x

and in line with the earlier post... here is a compilation of Darth Vader scenes using the various voice-overs of James Earl Jones...

and I guess it is not only me that finds his voice, really similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger's =P

the only thing lacking is Arnold's signature scream in almost all of his movies =P

Okay, by now, whether you like it or not... you should really know this song by Justin Bieber

Well.. days ago, James Earl Jones was on the Gayle King Show, and he read off the lyrics for the song.

and yes, this is the same guy who did the voice-overs for Darth Vader in Star Wars

so... it was only a matter of time, before someone put the 2 together.. lol =3

A simplistic take on a tough paradox in physics...

and if you really want the details into the twin paradox and time dilation.. this page tries its best to bring it across =P

The ultimate diao simi diao, and ah-beng walk over.

No.. the cake is not a lie =3

Sometimes, the questions we ask as a kid... are the hardest ones to answer =3

Just caught the film, The Mona Lisa Curse... and love its take on art in the modern world...

"... they didn't come to look at the Mona Lisa, they came in order to have seen it... and there is a crucial distinction, since one is a reality of experience, and the other is merely phantom..."

With the current development of flexible touchscreens... maybe the realization of such concepts from YankoDesign ain't really that far away =P

The 1 event I really regretted not going... hopefully my health perks up so that I won't miss their return in future =3

listening to them every morning before I enter the labs just makes the day so much brighter ^^x

Cleared my final one as Cat X today... looking forward to being Cat Y =3

Really thankful that the year is now officially over... been one plagued with sickness... hopefully the one to come will be much better =3

Somehow, I am now inspired to actually go for Gold now.. never gotten below 10... but 10 minutes for the 2.4km is something I have achieved before... so yeah.. ^^x

but then again... the 9 months factor is not something to look forward to =S

Dothetest.

2 years ago, they came up with the now famous moon-walking bear

lesser known is their Whodunnit video

here's another =3

Days ago, I posted about 64 year old Aleksander Doba, who completed the Trans-Atlantic voyage solo on a kayak... and the inspiring young @ heart choir...

well, here's the Asian version =3

  1. Single-hearted devotion: He is willing to invest a lot of time and effort in pursuing the hobby he loves. In the future, he will be a successful career-minded professional who puts his heart and soul into what he does. Besides, a devoted man is an attractive man. The next time he is concentrating on a DOTA game, take a good look at him, and you may find him attractive in ways you never did notice before.

  2. .... If you wanna read on about the list, click here ^^x...

  3. Indomitable spirit: Every DOTA-er starts from being a newb. Every DOTA player inevitably goes through the long and painful process of feeding and farming only a Boots of Speed and 2 Wraith Bands (not bracers coz too expensive) at 30mins. If he doesn’t have a never-say-die-attitude, he would have given up long ago. So, every DOTA player possess strong will and fighting spirit. And such a man, is of course, more reliable and can be depended upon.

  4. Gentlemanly: A DOTA player is gentlemanly. Even when he gets thrashed badly, he will still say GG (good game) to the opponent at the end of the game. At the most, just try again another day.

  5. Extraordinary patience: DOTA cultivates patience. The opponent might be owning 10 minutes into the game, but a good DOTA player will persevere on and wait patiently for a chance to turn the tables. He will hang on tightly and continue to farm, gank (and sometimes KS if given the opportunity), until he gets the chance to wipe out the opponent team and make the winning push. Similarly in life, you can be sure that he will not PP (pull plug) but will hold your hand and endure the hardships together.

  6. Extremely durable punchbag: Every DOTA-er would surely have been at the mercy of imba magic spells before, those that would make anyone pee in their pants, like Reverse Polarity+ Black hole, a Lion+Lina lane etc, or a Blink+Echo Slam when you are Broodmother pushing with a thousand spiderlings around you. So you can be sure that he makes a good punchbag when you need one, especially on those bad days.

  7. Attentive and sensitive: A good DOTA player an observant one. One of the basic skills of DOTA is to be observant of your surroundings, of every move your opponent makes or is planning to make. Therefore, when he is spending time with you, he will be very sensitive to your feelings. Every frown or smile will not pass by unnoticed. He will lend a listening ear when you are troubled, his shoulder will be there when you need to cry (or are just feeling tired). He will offer words of comfort when you are feeling down. Can you find anyone better?

  8. Lightning reflexes: Another basic requirement of DOTA is to have fast reflexes. Slowpokes are doomed to die in DOTA, because by the time you find the hotkey for Voodoo, you would have been killed by Invoker’s Tornado+Chaos Meteor, possibly followed up by Cold Snap. You don’t need to be as agile as Jet Li to get by in life, but there is no harm in having a partner who can react quickly to real-life situations.

  9. IT-savvy: A DOTA player is more knowledgeable about computers and the net than the average guy. Any DOTA player would be able to talk, at some length, about graphic cards, CPU, mice, keyboards, bandwidth speeds etc. In this day and age, it can be embarassing if your partner is computer-illiterate. With a DOTA player as a spouse, you can be sure that all your kids will grow up to be tech-savvy, capable individuals.

  10. Remarkable mental strength: Constant psychological pressure during DOTA is a norm. You never know when a Nerubian Assasin will pop out from nowhere, annihilating you within seconds. You can never be sure if a Pudge+CM is lying in wait at the secret shop. Hence, you can be assured that the DOTA player will not crumble easily in the face of real-life pressures, because he is so accustomed to handling such circumstances and the hours of DOTA has increased his mental endurance.

  11. Effective planner: If you fail to plan in DOTA, you plan to fail. Rush headlong into a teamfight without planning and you will be waiting for respawn next. A good DOTA player is adept at planning, calculating risks and making judgements. To initiate a gank or not, how to position your character is but some of the many decisions you have to make throughout the game. Thus, the pro DOTA player is a careful and meticulous one. He will plan a party on your birthday, and plan a surprise for your anniversary.

  12. Reliable breadwinner: Money makes the world go round. Farming for gold is of utmost importance in DOTA. Without items, your imba skills at micro/macro management cannot guarantee victory. The long and arduous process of farming for gold (especially reaching that elusive 3800 for a Relic) requires a lot of skill and technique. Hence, rest assured that a pro DOTA-er will always bring home the bacon, and lots of it. The husband earns for you to spend. What more can you ask for?

  13. Faithful partner: DOTA players are loyal lovers. They are able to resist the flaming hot Lina or that sexy Rylai, and mercilessly send them back to where they came from (fountain), despite their charming looks. DOTA players will not be tempted so easily.

  14. Team and community spirit: -Good- DOTA players are self-sacrificing. They always put themselves before others. They have good teamwork, and are willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. They don’t mind letting the team’s main DPS hero get the kill. This kind of person is not self-centred, and will place the family or society above self.

This year for Total Defense Day, the theme is Home: Keeping It Together... and they decided to do a remake of a classic National Day Song... the original sang by Kit Chan...

and now they've upped it to a full orchestra and a bundle of local singers

yes... alot of advertisement for Dr Dre headphones =P... and there is even alittle behind the scene footage and background into it =3... really meaningful stuff..

will this same video mean the same thing to me 2 years from now?

Imagine if he was wearing old school Fubu/Ecko baggy jeans instead =O

Have you noticed recently that most of the wall posts on your news feed are only from a small portion of your friends?

Have you been blocked? Or deleted? No.

Well, basically, facebook came up with the option of self-selecting only updates of friends whom you have interacted with recently... to be placed on your news feed...

A quick fix will be to scroll down to the end of your news feed and click "edit options" and change it as shown below ^^x

Yeah, I know its hours late, but the message still applies =3

I guess its nice to know that I'm not the only one with small boxes of stuff =3

and while we are on opening alcohol beverages... here is the video I talked about over the new year... yes you can open beer bottles with another bottle... be sure to use the rounded corner, and not the jagged tip... wipe the cap dry and don't hold too near the caps...

and yes, you can open the last beer bottle with paper..

or a dollar note...

or... if you have looser caps like coronas.. not hoegaardens.. and you have the assets... you could probably do this =x

So the recent hype online is about a french video of a guy uncorking a bottle with his shoe... I too don't understand french, but I think the actions are pretty simple to understand.

and no, this is not really a gimmick of any sort, frankly you can open a bottle by striking its base repeatedly... a shoe just provides a nice thick base... you can even use a simple towel, like in the video below.

But then again, yes, you will be mixing about the sediments, so don't really do it with a good bottle of wine, unless you are really desperate =x

Okay, so with the Oscar Awards around the corner... The Academy is now expressing concern about the possibility that Banksy's documentary - Exit Through the Gift Shop would actually win for Best Documentary Feature.
"... The fun but disquieting scenario is if that film wins and five guys in monkey masks come to the stage all saying, 'I'm Banksy!' Who the hell do we give it to?... "
This is in the midst of the hype as to whether or not the documentary is a hoax... while Banksy has been quoted saying:

"... Ordinarily I wouldn’t mind if people believe me or not, but the film’s power comes from the fact it’s all 100% true. This is from the frontline, this is watching an art form self-combust in front of you. Told by the people involved. In real time. This is a very real film about what it means to ‘keep it real’... "

well, personally, after watching it, the documentary does seem like a slap-in-the-face at our current lifstyles... and if its a hoax, the biggest slap will come if it's unveiled as such at the acceptance speech on winning the Oscars... imagine the irony, a faux scripted film winning in a category aimed at showing reality as it is.

But then again, maybe it is true too.

.... If you wanna read on about my review of the film... Click here ^^x...

In it's crux, the film is about the journey of Thierry Guetta, a wanabe film-maker, and his entry as Mr Brain-Wash (MBW) into the underground world of street art.

The film can be seen in 2 parts... 1st, with Thierry as an accomplice/apprentice to some of the best in street art... starting with Space Invader... you have him behind the camera.. really shaky and unprofessional footages, high risk activities, the real side to it.

During this part, you get the feel that this artists take years to perfect their art, finding symbols that they relate to, finding places and themes that mean something to them, working hard to produce and install their work, even if it meant great danger... all accumulating with the hype about Banksy and finally the staging of Banksy's Barely Legal Exhibition... there is even a swipe at the auctioning of street art as a commodity

"... suddenly it was all about the money, but it was never about the money..."

and then the movie changed its focus... suddenly someone else was filming Thierry, and it started to look professional... and the whole film took an ironic twist.

as a film maker, Thierry was shown to be terrible... now as a street artist, he took a totally different route from the norm... while other street artists fiercely protected their anonymity, leaving their mark only in the form of style, labels or taggings... and focused more on their topic, on bringing across the message... Theirry on the other hand, went about putting up putting up a graphic tag portrait of himself.

To me, this was a swipe at street art... street art differs from street vandalism only when it invokes thought... it is not about leaving your mark, and making you more well-known.. although in certain countries, it is used to mark out your territory.. but more so, it is about the thought process, why the location, why the logo or image of choice, rebelling against a system... that's what really sets great street artists apart.
Personally, Theirry's self-portraits, aside from being a bold act, were meaningless. And in the last few minutes of the film, after his self-proclamation of being a successful street artist, we catch a glimpse of his clumsy and comical hands-on execution... Totally nothing like the swift, professional execution of his mentors, but more of child using crayons on a wall.

But, as the film puts it.. the public doesn't care about it... After his brief activity on the street, Theirry went on to hold a full-scale art exhibtion... going from being nothing... to being everything... no one had probably ever seen or recognised his works... but simple endorsements from Banksy and others attracted the media, and it snowballed from there... even the exhibition itself was kinda faux, with him basing his "creations" off that of others, and even hiring workers to do up those works, and to some extent, allowing them to decide the concept and execution of the exhibition... to the end, it seemed that all he did was really put in the dough, work out a few endorsements and media interviews, and Bamm!! He was a hit.

The film upped the ridicule level, by interviewing the public, who hailed him as one of the greatest artist of this age, comparing him to Banksy, fully appreciating his work... despite never hearing of MBW before... solely because of the hype of hearsay and the media...

And suddenly it became about the money... we see footages of Theirry giving absurd off-the-head amounts for his works, and people actually buying it, turning the exhibition into a million-dollar event.

Towards, the end, we see how successful Theirry has become from it all... despite being slammed by his mentors... which really leaves us to question:

Is Arts appreciation today really just a show of sophistication?

Are we really shallow in our appreciation of Art?

In an age of remixes and reinventing, what is originality?

Are starving artists just lacking marketing strategies?

Are we brain-washed from media hype that we allow them to govern our opinions?

What is Art today? and what discerns the fine line between mediocre and greatness?

Are fans of street art, really rebels against system, or just suckers in a another commodities industry?

Really food for thought.

And yes, in case you haven heard... Borders is going to be in for a change..

Borders Group is preparing to file for bankruptcy protection as early as Monday or Tuesday, reported Deal Journal colleagues Mike Spector and Jeff Trachtenberg, as the struggling bookstore chain tries to put its financial house in orde
As part of its plans to cut costs, Borders also is expected to close 200 stores, with an option to close 50 more, according to our Journal colleagues. That means a big box store near you may be having going-out-of business sales. It also means potentially thousands of Borders employees may lose their jobs, the Journal reported.

Wonder how that will affect the Singapore outlets... maybe a clearance sale while they restructure?... must say that I rarely visit the stores these days with e-readers and services like BookDepository... but yeah... Wheelock place will never be the same again =/

What will you be doing when you are 64?

Playing Mahjong? Watching Tv all day long? Barely able to complete your IPPT without dying?

Well.. definitely not this... completing the Trans-Atlantic voyage solo on a kayak.

Aleksander Doba, a 64-year-old native of Poland, took off from Dakar, capital of the west African nation of Senegal, back on Oct. 26. After 98 days, 23 hours, 42 minutes at sea, Doba and his custom 23-foot-long, 39-inch-wide human-powered kayak landed at Acaraú, a city on Brazil’s northeast coast. The trip covered some 3,320 miles in all, and Doba became only the fourth known person to accomplish such a feat, and the very first to do it nonstop.
and he even had time to tweet about the perils and sights along the way... through a Satellite phone recharged by solar panels on his kayak.

and I have no idea what he is saying in this report, but it gives you live footage of his boat and his "youthful" self ^^x

The inspiring work of this-abled photographer.

"... My work makes people question their assumptions. Some people don’t think I am blind after looking at my work. I am a visual person, I just can’t see... "

By Stephoodle... bringing geek love to another level =x

In case you haven caught it.

and the kid behind the magic =3

Yes, here in Asia we are celebrating the 15 days of Chinese New Year ^^x and this year Crystal Jade has come up with a new idea =3... Valid till 17th February.

Dang. I really need to stop falling sick. There is so much out there to do =S

Sucker Punch.

And despite all the marvel hype this year... the one movie I'm really looking forward to... is a sucker punch =x

Hot female leads, guns, swords, samurais, mechs, dragons, war machines, brothels... what more can you ask for in a movie?

Based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro...

If you love great books, you would've already known about it... if you haven, do catch a read before the movie opens in March... I'm not going to spoil the fun by going into the storyline... but take this from me... it is one of those books that I'm looking for a hardcover to keep for life.

What is it... to be human?

Great tip when dining out too =3

Months back, I posted up a video of rock melting in a lab..

well, now... a teenager has managed to replicate it with cheap materials =x

"... I drilled a small hole in the dish and glued a piece of PVC pipe on the back... Light shines through the hole and hits the translucent plastic on the end of the pipe. All I had to do was aim the dish once and mark the spot... As long as the target doesn’t conduct heat away too fast it will melt or vaporize just about anything eventually... I have vaporized before carbon, which occurs above 6,500 Fahrenheit (~3593.33 °C)... "
